Fly Away Bird

Just like a bird, you flew freely into our lives,

You knew exactly what house number we lived in,

How the house was built and the colour of our walls,

You sat on our window sill and waited patiently for us.

Each day, we would run to the window and greet you,

But you would fly away, stealing pieces of our hearts,

So we could chase you down the road and up the alleys.

Each day you gave a little more of yourself to us,

We seen that spark in you burn so brightly,

You made us laugh, and you made us feel loved,

We thought you would be in our lives forever and ever,

But the truth is nothing lasts forever and ever.

Without any notice you made a choice and left us behind,

You did not come back to the window sill each day,

You did not play your stupid little games we thrived on.

We became lost and could not find our way for a long time,

We realised it never rains and it never pours,

It pelts down like one billion hail stones that never seem to end.

This is our goodbye to you, something you never gave us.

We hope you have fun on your next adventures.

oh it’s hard when someone that was so close for a time decides to move on..and without saying good bye is double tough…glad that you wrote a good bye..and who knows..maybe they return someday…just like the birds..

wow nice intensity to this at the end there…ironic as we are bing pelted by rain and winds right now…there is a sadnes though in losing that bird that guides the way but a hope in finding your own once more…

I love the use of the hail to ramp up the emotions (anger, loss) like all of a sudden you realize that hurt is still burning, still right in front of your face, even though you may distract yourself from it for a brief while..

It’s a true shame when we do not get to say our goodbyes…but at least you can write this sendoff to the memory, and hope for the best for they and we alike…

Thanks Chris! I have only been thinking lately how poetry is a good way to get feeling and emotions out. It really helps :)

Aww… sad to lose them when you had gotten so used to them calling on you. I used to have budgies and one I had for over 11 years. He was so tame. I could walk all around the house with him on my shoulder. Another used to climb down inside the neck of my sweater to keep warm.
Really enjoyed this read :) And yes, poetry/writing, is so good for lightening the load of stress and emotions.

We had a budgie when I was younger and I was petrified of it especially when it was let go in the house a few times!! Thanks so much for commenting :)

This could be about a bird, but works as well as a metaphor for our children, or someone who has touched our lives, there and then gone–leaving a sense of sadness, emptiness at the loss. Especially get that feel from the last two lines, but like how you wished it well despite the loss. Very nicely penned.

Thanks Ginny! Actually, it was very funny as I asked my brother (who I am very close to) what or who he thought this poem was about. He was way off track but he understood once I told him. I love how people interpret poems differently. Thanks so much for your comment. It’s very much appreciated :)

This is really lovely. I have this picture of a bird flying along in its workd and children chasing it and turning its world into their own. The interesting aspect of this is whether it is a bird or perhaps a mood personified that is the object of the poem’s joy. Both possibilities present unique views on life.

That is quite interesting that you can see both those views as I can see both points as well. Thanks for that insight :)
